Gyan Anant Vidyalaya Atrauli to be the First Environmental School in Uttar Pradesh

 There are many schools in urban areas to educate children, but rural India lacks this basic infrastructure. Mobius Foundation has stepped in to bridge this gap. The foundation is going to open Gyan Anant Vidyalaya (GAV) in Atrauli village of Ghaziabad district. Environmental education will be the primary focus during academic sessions. Initially, the school will have classes till 7th standard. From the next academic year, the school will offer education till 12th standard.

The Gyan Anant Vidyalaya (GAV) will have all the facilities of an urban school, fulfilling the aspirations of the rural youth. The school will work with a different approach and the focus would be on the all-round development of children. The school would create sensitivity among students towards the environment. It believes in the fact that all children have different talents and abilities, which can be nurtured for a greater benefit to society.

Talking about the school Pradip Burman, Chairman-Mobius Foundation, said, "The school aims to create a sense of responsibility among its students towards the environment. The school would impart moral values in students. It will be the first kind of institution teaching students an array of subjects including moral and environmental education. Sustainable education will be encouraged through this approach."

He further said that every person should try to conserve nature. Gyan Anant Vidyalaya will play a big role in environmental conservation as it will make children aware of the conservation of nature and natural resources. It will bring change in the thinking of society towards the environment.

About Gyan Anant Vidyalaya (GAV):

The enrollment process has already started in this school with an intake capacity of 1800 students. Classes will start in the school from the next session. Besides study, the school will also focus on extra and co-curricular activities such as competitive activity, school trips, music bands, sports (indoor and outdoor), literary activity, social service, acting, drama, etc. The school will have a team of experienced teachers who will impart skills and knowledge in students.

Can the use of green crackers reduce pollution levels during Diwali in India?

 

After COVID-19, Air Pollution is increasingly becoming the next health crisis in India. Three major cities-Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata, are in the top 10 cities with worst air pollution in the entire world. With Diwali just around the corner, the air quality can plummet further in the coming days.

Every year, India celebrates the festival of lights with diyas, sweets, firecrackers, and great aplomb. However, the deteriorating air quality across states & union territories has raised warning signs and a cause of concern for the upcoming celebrations.

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a complete ban on sale and use of firecrackers in Delhi and nearby areas that will last till November 30. Delhi has already topped the charts for the worst pollution in the world and the ban aims to prevent the rise of pollution levels in the capital. Several states like Haryana, Karnataka, Chandigarh, Mumbai, West Bengal, Odisha, National Capital Region have followed suit. The governments are urging people to opt for ‘Green Crackers’ to minimize the damage caused by crackers.

Green crackers are an environment-friendly alternative to the loud and chemical-filled firecrackers burst every year. They have a smaller shell casing with less harmful raw material and cause lower emissions. Green crackers have additives and release water vapour that suppress dust particles and cause 30% less particulate matter pollution. Apart from this, these crackers do not have banned chemicals like lithium, lead, barium, and arsenic. Also known as Safe Water Releaser (SWA), Safe Minimum Aluminium (SAFAL) and Safe Thermite Cracker (STAR), green crackers were researched and developed by CSIR-NEERI scientists on court’s directions.  

Over the years, firecrackers have not only polluted our air but also caused noise pollution, burn injuries, fires, injuries to stray animals and loss of life and property. In 2019, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) responded to over 300 calls and 7 people lost their lives. Stats from other states show 498 patients were admitted to OPD at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Jaipur including 108 emergency cases. In Odisha, a man scummed to death and another was charred to death due to bursting of firecrackers. Kolkata witnessed a tragic loss of a 5-year old boy who was just passing by some people bursting crackers.

Numerous steps to combat Diwali pollution are taken by various authorities in India. Cracker ban, use of ‘green crackers’ in moderate air quality areas, etc. are some steps taken in this direction. While green crackers are not a complete solution, their use instead of traditional crackers can be a detriment to minimizing the damage.

Commenting on the pollution levels and impending Diwali celebrations, Pradip Burman says “While celebrations in India are considered incomplete without the spark of crackers, it is imperative that we restraint from participating in such activities this year. With the air quality already dangerous to breathe, let us not make it a choking disaster.” Pradip Burman is a prominent influencer, environmentalist, and crusader of sustainability in India.

The consequences of the environment pollution are not hard to comprehend,whereas the solution to ending environment pollution is not easy to come, however attempts can always be made to find out a solution keeping in mind sustainability,legal parameters and judicial pronouncements and NGOs have a very important role to play in this.

Here’s a list of Top NGOs in India working towards protecting our environment :

1. The indian Environmental Society

The Indian Environmental Society (IES) is a dynamic and flexible NGO working towards Environment with a global vision and local focus. It was set up in 1972 to increase the consciousness and knowledge about the environment and the major environmental problems. Indian Environmental Society has been providing leadership roles in the field of environment and resource management since its inception. IES has been actively doing environmental development activities with a philosophy of community participation and self help. The projects and programmes undertaken by IES progresses from local and national level strategies to suggesting global solutions on critical environment related issues. IES has created widespread environmental and civic awareness by promoting community based environmental improvement efforts. The aim of the Society is to reach out to general masses, youth, students with the messages and services, build-up grass-root movement, and influence need based policy formulation. 

2. Swechha

Their  genesis lay in the year 2000 as ‘We for Yamuna’ campaign, a collective response towards growing apathy towards one of the most polluted rivers of the world. Since then the organization has gathered popular and powerful voices for the support of this cause and has emerged as the loudest and strongest voice in India on the matter. Apart from this campaign, Swechha has grown over the decades to work on other issues of sustainable development and social change and has had considerable impact locally, nationally as well as internationally.

3. Bombay Natural History Society

 Started it’s  work in September 1883 at Mumbai. It aims to collect data on the specimens on natural history throughout the Indian sub-continent. To disseminate knowledge of flora and fauna by means of lectures, field trips, literature and expeditions and, to study wildlife related problems and recommend management plans to conserve wildlife and its habitat. It conducts field research projects on bird migration and studies on the movement and population structure of Indian avifauna. It also conducts studies of certain endangered species of wildlife and their habitat and through environmental education impart the knowledge and awareness of the need to conserve wildlife.Its  Publications includes : Hornbill (4 issues in a year) and other journals.

4. The Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) 

 Set up in 1984 to spread awareness of environmental issues and try to find solutions for them. It is based at Ahmedabad and they have offices all over the country. They mainly aim to create environmental awareness in the communities.They conduct widespread environmental education and training programmes through a very vast network. They have also taken up projects related to conservation of biodiversity and eco-development.They have a vast range of publications – books, posters, educational packages, bibliographies and directories.There is also a large computerised database – the Environment Education bank, which has a collection of more than 800 environment concepts, about 2500 environment related activities and 100s of case studies.

5. Gandhi Peace Foundation – Environment Cell

 Began functioning at Delhi from June 1979. It was set up mainly to promote the environmental activities of rural development agencies; to disseminate environmental information through the publication of up to date reports on environmental issues; to organize workshops and seminars for environmental experts, policy makers, individuals and organisations working for environmental issues. Their activities include researching the role of women in community forestry and rural development; conducting studies in soil erosion, water logging, drainage and seepage around select dams; planting fast growing trees.They bring out publications and educational aids on the Chipko Movement, environmental education, dams etc; audio visuals on Mitti Bachao, the Chipko Movement, deforestation, the Yamuna and the Narmada rivers and traditional rain harvesting techniques. 

6. Vatavara

 An NGO working in the sector of solid waste collection. They have around 27 projects in different parts of Delhi including JNU and NOIDA. This organisation was formed in order to improve the ways and means of garbage collection through a more concrete method. People normally dump their garbage indiscriminately in the MCD bins where they overflow and a stink begins rising. But now through the method of door to door collection the colonies are much cleaner then they were before this organisation stepped in. For a very nominal charge the garbage is collected from the doorstep and taken to the private dump where it is segregated. Biodegradable waste is put into compost pits and the non-biodegradable is further segregated into groups such as, glass, paper, and plastics and then sent further to recycling industries or to mills that require these for raw material.

In residential colonies such as Asiad Village and Vasant Kunj, where Vatavaran has been very effective, the initiative is now being carried forward by the residents' welfare societies of these areas. The compost pits yield very high quality manure that is either sold or used to promote horticultural activities within the colony. This waste now becomes an income source and cost effective. 

 

7. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) 

Established in 1974,TERI is a wholly independent not-for-profit research institute. Its mission is to develop and promote technologies, policies and institutions for efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. It is NGO Related to Environment in India and has been imparting environmental education through projects, workshops, audio visual aids and quiz competitions. It deals with policy related work in the energy sector, research on environmental subjects development on renewable energy technologies and promotion of energy efficiency in the industry and transport. TERI also has a major programme in biotechnology, the applications of which are oriented towards increased biomass production, conversion of waste into useful products and mitigating the harmful environmental impacts of several economic activities. Publications: They have several books on energy, climate change, renewable energy, regulation, environment and sustainable development and forestry & biodiversity. They also publish research journals and digest journals, newsletters. There are also several databases and audio-visuals on various environment issues.Some of them are as follows – 1. Role of Non-Governmental Organisations in the Protection of Environment

 Non-governmental organisations or NGOs are non-profit groups that function independently from the government, as the name suggests. There are NGOs that work nationally and internationally, towards humanitarian causes. There are also NGOs for environment protection, Greenpeace, Indian Environmental society (IES), and Mobius Foundation, to name a few of the top NGOs in India.

In today’s date, there is a growing need to adopt practices that can help to save the environment, and to work as quickly as possible. In such a scenario, NGOs play a very important role.

The government is the body that can make laws relating to environmental regulation and protection. But it is the non-governmental organisations that help fill the gaps and work on the implementation of these laws.

Eco ngo help in keeping the general public informed and in disseminating information to the people, relating to sustainable lifestyle practices that can help save and protect nature.
