What is environmental sustainability and why is it important?

Environmental sustainability is a topic that everyone seems to be talking about… from building eco homes and conscious communities to adopting sustainable food, renewable energy in our lifestyle.

Maybe turning to low impact furniture and clothing, but what does the term ‘ environmental sustainability’ really mean?

There are many definitions that are used but the concept was coined in the 1987 report “Our Common Future”.

They recognised the link inequality, poverty and environmental degradation and the way out to this environmental crisis would be to eradicate these issues.

The various definitions of environmental sustainability leads to more queries about the incredible role we have to play.

As a species whose constantly evolving, this definition pertains to change the way we live… how should we change the way we live and conduct business on this planet to ensure?

What many of us can do is change our living conditions in the form of eco-village, sustainability. Reevaluating the work done (permaculture, green building, sustainable agriculture).

Developing new technologies (green technologies, renewable energy).

Why do we need sustainable practices?

While the issue of environmental degradation and biodiversity has long been recognized, the individual responsibility that the issue at hand demands is not lived up to. There has to be an inbred understanding about ‘the interlinkedness’ of our actions… how we as a community share the responsibility for our collective actions. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we live on don’t recognize national lines- so it is up to each and every individual to take care.

There are many initiatives that one person can partake in- large, small, national and global- we can always take part in it. Looking after environmental health is crucial to making sure that our future generations have access to clean, green, healthy lives.

Many projects are underway, which range from cleaning up the beaches to awareness programs for kids belonging to lower strata.

You can also take up or initiate our personal projects something that you as an individual are passionate about. Involve other household members with you as well.

Mission Sustainability: Population VS Planet – The talk of this century

On average, 83 million people are added to the world population every year. As per the latest estimates by the UN, we will have a global population of 9 billion by 2030.

However, we only have one planet to live on- Earth and it has finite resources to sustain human needs. If the human population keeps growing at the current rate, our planet will not be able to keep up.

And that is the problem!

That’s what prompted Pradip Burman to launch this year-long initiative ‘Mission Sustainability: Population VS Planet’ in partnership with WION.

Through this initiative we aim to aware, educate and empower the current generation with solid facts and teach them the way for stabilizing the population for a better future. The population is directly linked to climate change, global warming, ecological disruption and biodiversity loss. And our planet is reeling under the burden of population explosion and the multiplying needs of humans. And there is nothing inexplicable about it.

Today, you and I are witnesses to the rising housing crisis, deepening poverty, growing unemployment, and declining health in our country due to unsustainable overpopulation. Among these environmental and economic crises, the two most apparent challenges that we face today are air pollution and climate change.

Recently, some of the prominent metro cities in India were rated as the most polluted cities in the world. This shows the quality of the air we breathe today. As for climate change, in the past few years, we have seen rising temperatures in India and shorter winter seasons. That is a sign of climate change and global warming that we face.

The connection between air pollution, climate change and population, is simple. More population leads to more vehicles, more pollution and higher climate temperatures.

But how do we save our planet from the impending disaster?

I feel, education is the key to saving our planet. By inculcating environmental awareness as part of school education and empowering the youth to be climate warriors, we can make future generations a part of the ‘Save the Planet’ movement.

Mobius Foundation understands the importance of education and instils this as a basis in each of its projects. Some of these initiatives include:

Project Aakar: It aims to spread awareness and promote population stabilization methods especially to the rural population of India.

World Environment School: There is a growing need to understand the environment and adopt a sustainable lifestyle. This school aims to teach students just that.

Gyan Anant Vidyalaya: Situated in Atrouli village, the school makes quality education accessible to the rural area and emphasis on educating the youth there about the environment.

How do NGOs contribute to sustainable development?

Non-Government Organisations are the pillars of promoting a sustainable change in our environment. They are by larger the biggest contributors to spread awareness and spearheading conservations efforts around the world. The increasing pollution, urbanisation, loss of biodiversity and rising global temperatures are an indicator of the climate emergency our planet is facing.

The sustainable development NGOs are key partners in fighting this climate change and working towards the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). These NGOs are a prominent source of inspiration and hands-on experience for a sustainable planet. They offer research on SDGs and internship and volunteer opportunities to anyone who wants to be a part of this change.

Today, we have a list of top sustainable development NGOs India that are leading the change towards and greener and better world.

VASUDHA FOUNDATION

Vasudha means ‘the Earth: the giver of wealth’ and this foundation is working to create a better planet for the future generation. It is a Non-Government organisation that focuses to promote environment-friendly and sustainable models of energy. The foundation promotes renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies for cleaner energy.

MOBIUS FOUNDATION

Mobius is one Best NGO in India and a leading foundations working on multiple fronts to combat climate change. The NGO has also hosted an international conference on sustainability development, the ‘Youth for Earth’ challenge and build a school that will deliver quality education to rural Indians with sustainable education at its core.

Trade Alert: Pradip Burman At Dabur India Limited (NSE:DABUR), Has Just Spent ₹7.5m Buying A Small Number of Shares

Investors who take an interest in Dabur India Limited (NSE:DABUR) should definitely note that insider Pradip Burman recently paid ₹500 per share to buy ₹7.5m worth of the stock. However, it only increased shareholding by a small percentage, and it wasn't a huge purchase by absolute value, either.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Dabur India

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Vice Chairman, Mohit Burman, sold ₹9.6m worth of shares at a price of ₹520 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of ₹503. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 54.15k shares worth ₹26m. But insiders sold 36.33k shares worth ₹19m. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Dabur India insiders. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Dabur India is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this free list of growing companies with insider buying.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Dabur India insiders own about ₹606b worth of shares (which is 68% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Do The Dabur India Insider Transactions Indicate?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Dabur India insiders are well aligned, and quite possibly think the share price is too low. That's what I like to see! Therefore, you should definitely take a look at this FREE report showing analyst forecasts for Dabur India.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.

For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. We currently account for open market transactions and private dispositions, but not derivative transactions.

WION launches 'Mission Sustainability - Population v/s Planet'. Read on

WION, in partnership with Mobius Foundation, is taking the vision of the Government of India forward and launching a one-year-long social initiative called 'Mission Sustainability - Population v/s Planet'. The campaign commenced with a two-hour-long Thought Leadership Conclave on February 20, 2021.

Technology has advanced in the last 100 years to give us television, satellites, space exploration, and instant communication through apps. But today, there is an urgency to take action, in the short and long term -- for the survival of civilisation as we know it. Although the general population is aware that the future looks bleak, the causes are not immediately apparent to the common person. But if we had to attribute the difficulty to a single cause, it is the explosion of population. The solution (mitigation), however, does not seem feasible.

Overpopulation is among the most pressing environmental issues, silently aggravating the forces behind global warming, environmental pollution, habitat loss, and consumption of finite natural resources at speeds faster than their rate of regeneration. Ecological issues are anyway just the beginning for many more problems and issues.

This conclave on WION seeks to trigger an informed and engaging debate around the dynamics of population and its bearing on economic growth and our resource-scarce planet.

"Population explosion will cause many problems for our future generations. But there is a vigilant section of public that stops to think, before bringing a child to the world, whether they can do justice to the child, give them all that she or he wants. They have a small family and express their patriotism to the country. Let’s learn from them. There is need for social awareness.” - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, has been invited to grace the event as the chief guest and share his vision for population stabilisation and sustainable development of India. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog will also join the event and address India's population policy and family planning programme.

The conclave will feature policy experts, demographic researchers, and academicians discussing issues like 'Human Population Growth and Climate Change', 'Population Stabilisation: The roadmap for India' and 'The Effect of Educational Intervention on Family Planning'. The list of panellists includes notable names like Pradip Burman, Chairman, Mobius Foundation (best Ngo in India); Dr M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences; Rameshwar Prasad Gupta, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director, PFI; Shailaja Chandra, Former Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Kartikeya Sarabhai, Director, CEE; and Professor KS James, Director, IIPS.
